The family name Raudonis comes from Lithuania (Litauen). The lithanian word "raudonas" means "red". Exact translation for "raudonis" is "redness" or "flush" (phenomenon when face turns red due to flow of blood). The lithuanian language is similar to the latvian (lettish) language. But "red" in latvia is "sarkans". They have a family name "Sarkanis" which means absolutely the same as "Raudonis". With 100% reliability can i say that somebody of our grand, grand ... fathers originates from Lithuania. And with 80% reliability i can say that they lived in west north part of Lithuania (near the baltic see). This region name is Zemaitija (Zhemaitija). In english this region name is Samogitia. (The history of this region you can read in the book "Samogitia". It was written by BU-CUs-Professor C. T. Pichel). Zemaitija (Samogitia) has long and complicated history of relations with Germany. The town Memel (in lithanian Klaipeda) is one example, where history of Samogitia and Germany come in contact. For a long tome Samogitia and Germany where neighbours (east Prussia). |
